I don’t feel comfortable selling myself

Many people have a lot of difficulties when it comes to saying good things about themselves, or about their professional services, to people that they haven’t met or known before.
“Let them try for themselves, let them see how I am doing, they can see for themselves what I have to offer, let them decided if I’m good enough or not. I don’t want to be pushy!”

Most people find it very tough to sell themselves.
It’s a combination of not feeling confident enough that what it is that you are offering is actually good enough and will be of value to other people; and bad previous experiences with pushy salespeople. You don’t want to put yourself together in the same line with these overly aggressive people, just the thought of it gives you the creeps.

What does selling actually mean?

Have you ever received a great service from someone and felt very happy to pay for it?
Even more, was it so good that you might have been willing to pay more for it, since you were so content with what you’ve received?
Is there a product that you really love? One that even if it would cost a lot more you would still be very happy to pay for it?

Have you ever helped someone or did something for anyone else that made you feel good? You knew that this person will be happy and grateful to receive it from you, and it felt very satisfying for you.
You didn’t feel pushy then, right? You would happily do it again if they asked you to, right? It felt natural, effortless, fun, it was easy. It felt good.

So what is selling and buying anyway?
When you exchange money for something, it is an act of mutual contribution: you are giving something, and receiving something back in return.
When you are receiving something that you love, it feels good and easy to pay for it, you know that it’s worth it, and vice versa; when you love what you have to give, it feels good and easy to receive money back for it.

Why do you love what you do?

There’s a reason why you chose to be an acupuncturist, a music producer, a designer, a makeup artist, or any other profession. There must be something that you love about it.
There’s a reason why you chose to use a specific product or service, and continue to use it or promote it, there must be something that you love about it.

Can you connect to those feelings, of why do you love what you do?
Can you connect to those feelings, of why do you love this service or product?
Can you connect to how it contributed to your life?
Can you connect to the gratitude that comes with it?

Now imagine how it would feel to share these feelings with someone else.
You know how good you felt because of it, wouldn’t it be very easy to offer and share it with someone else? To let that someone have what you have?
When you are acting from this place and this mindset, receiving is easy and harmonious; you are not pushing or stressing anything, you are both contributing to each other.
It’s easy.
